How to start a Sonos Playlist with an NFC Tag

Launch a Sonos Playlist with your iPhone and an NFC Tag

NFCs are great low cost discs that can trigger all kinds of things when you wave your iPhone over them. In this post we will show you how to combine an Orto Shortcut, NFC Tag and Shortcut Automation to play a Sonos playlist from an NFC Tag.

Orto Shortcuts requires the premium version of Orto. Download on the Apple App Store

Setting up Apple Shortcuts to Trigger from NFC

You will need your Orto Shortcut for Sonos (or any Siri Shortcut) setup before you complete these steps

1

Load the Apple Shortcuts App

2

Tap 'Automation' on the bottom navigation bar

3

Tap + at the top right to create a new automation

4

Choose "Create Personal Automation"

5

Scroll down to NFC

6

Tap Scan next to 'NFC Tag'

7

Now slowly tap the top of your iPhone on the NFC tag

8

Give this new NFC Tag it's own name

9

Tap Add Action - This is where we are going to tell the Automation what to do

10

Either Search or Scroll to find "Shortcuts"

11

Pick Run Shortcut - iOS 15 has lots of options here

12

Tap on the grey-ed out shortcut label after Run

13

Pick the Shortcut you want to trigger - you must have a Shortcut pre-setup at this stage!

14

Tap Next

15

Toggle off Ask before running - this will make everything smoother. But you still might find it is best to unlock your iPhone before 'tagging'

Now unlock your phone and give it a go
